New York, New York

We took a family vacation to New York City during spring break. Highlights were MOMA, Brooklyn Museum, The King & I, Hedwig & The Angry Inch, a local flower shop and the city itself. But of course to reconnect with some of the most beautiful friends I've met in my life, both old & new. NY was still vibrant, original and colorful. Personally, movies like "West Side Story", "All That Jazz", "After Hours (by Scorsese), "The Warriors"  and "Do The Right Thing" definitely represent this magical city. What is yours?

先月、春休みを利用して家族旅行でかなり久し振りにニューヨークに出かけて来た。ハイライトは、ブルックリン美術館、MOMA、渡辺謙さん主演の王様と私、ヘドウィグ＆アングリーインチ（いずれもミュージカル）、ローカルフラワーショップ、この街全体そのもの。でもやっぱり、これまでの人生で出会った素晴しい新旧の友達との再会。この土地は相変わらず活気溢れ、鮮やかでユニークそのもの。私に取って、NYやブルックリンと言うと未だに以下の映画が目の前に現れる：「ウェストサイドストーリー」「ウオリアーズ」「ドウザライントシング」「オールザットジャズ」そしてスコセッシ監督のアンダーグラウンド＆オフビート作品「アフターアワーズ」。皆さんに取ってはどの映画がNYそのもの？

Oh Flora!

California is experiencing such a warm winter this year. Everything is blooming early, which you see all over these days. The wonder of nature gives me joy, and they can even be like my religion. Especially flowers.
I am particularly drawn to Berkeley's restaurant, Chez Panisse's magnificent flower arrangement, regularly handled by a local flower designer, Max Gill. There is something very lively and sensual about his touch and care. I have a belief - what we cannot control of, is somehow the most beautiful - like everything in the nature, animals and children who are still profoundly unimpacted. Do you agree?

今年のカリフォルニアは異常な暖冬で雨も極端に少なく、故に花々が早い時期に満開中。花そのものが私に取っては宗教の様なものなので、喜びと充実感が増えるのでとても嬉しい時期だ。バークレーにあるレストラン、シェパニースのフラワーアレンジメントは特に素晴しく、いつもうっとりする。数日毎に変わるここの花はベイエリアのフラワーデザイナー、マックス・ギル氏に寄るもので彼の手にかかると、たちまち色っぽくそして生き生きすると思う。私がいつも信じて疑わない事、それは人間がコントロール出来ないものが究極に美しいということ。自然にあるもの全て、動物、そして子供達。そう思いませんか？

Creative Growth Art Center

You see here, Justice for Michael Brown at Creative Growth Art Center in downtown Oakland. This non-profit center serves & supports adult artists with developmental, mental and physical challenges, providing a professional studio environment as well as a gallery. It is a vital place for people from all aspects, period.

アートギャラリーが数多くあるオークランドのダウンタウンの中でも突出しているのは、こちらクリエイティブ・グロウス・アートセンター。精神的・肉体的に障害をもつ芸術達が自由に創作・制作し、各自作品を発表出来るアートスタジオ兼ギャラリーがこちら。基本はノンプロフィットで運営されおり、中には著名な人達も金銭的にヘルプをしている。彼らが生み出す作品は、いつ尋ねても力強く生き生きとしていて同時に優しく美しい。あなたもきっと心を動かされるはず。

Ozzy Moon

Did you see a really intense full moon a couple of nights ago? What this fully rounded-glow, spoke to me, was "Bark At The Moon"! For an elementary school girl I was back when this song was big, its music video was simply frightening. I already knew he was a rock star then but also a horrid man who could bite you under the full moon. Who knew he would have become a reality show star that he is today, ha!
２日前の満月は、まるでオジーオズボーンの代表曲「バークアットザムーン」そのままだった。そのPVを初めて観た時、私はまだ小学生でそれはそれは恐ろしく本気で恐怖心にびびったのだった。当時、彼が既にワールドワイド・ロックスターなのは知っていたけれど、同時に近寄るべきでないシンボルでもあった。。。が、それが現在誰もが知ってるリアリティ番組おじさんパパ、「オジー」になるとは。。。

D'Angelo on Saturday Night Live

He and his band had put such a stunning show on SNL the other night. He's definitely one of the most important artists today, immensely complex, talented and charismatic…all intertwined in his soul. With Black Lives Matter and I Can't Breath t-shirts on his band members, he needed to stand up with his fellow visionaries.

現在、全米いや世界中にいるアーティストの中でも、様々な面で一際光り秀逸なアーティストが彼なのは間違い無い。バンドのメンバー達の現代アメリカ社会を想い、訴える意思の力強さが音を立ててビシビシ、と伝わって来た圧巻パフォーマンスであった。

Dashi Katachi Essence of Japan

Last weekend, I had a great opportunity to work as an interpreter for "How to Make a wooden Butter Knife" workshop taught by two young wood masters from Kagoshima, Japan, Shuichi Kunitake & Shoji Morinaga at Heath Ceramics San Francisco. (after I hear his lecture and interpret his words over & over…I ended up teaching too! Grateful!) Lots of carving away for 2 straight hours in silence, which was indeed a very Zen-ish practice for all of us! 　

サンフラシスコのヒースセラミクスで先日開催された、日本の出汁・その周りを形成するクラフト＆作家達を紹介する大きなイベントで「木製バターナイフ」を作るワークショップの通訳をさせていただいた。2日間共満員御礼！皆さんが必死にしかし精魂込めて木を削る行為は禅ワークそのものだ！講師を務めたのは、センスと才能にキラキラと満ちた２人の鹿児島県出身の若手木工作家、国武秀一さんと盛永省治さん、彼らの繊細かつパワフルな作品を、是非ご覧になってみて下さい。
